Workday Description:
Historic Camp Santa Maria was established in 1932. It is now operated by YMCA camps and offers low-cost outdoor camps and educational experiences for children, groups, and academic societies. This property is threatened by a dense, old growth forest ecosystem that has not been thinned since the camp’s inception. The threat of non-defensible space around historic buildings, and the geographical location of the camp pose a serious risk of wildfire.

For these reasons, CUSP, in partnership with Camp Santa Maria are about to begin a large scale defensible space project. Due to the size and density of these trees, heavy equipment will be used to thin the forest canopy. It is the risk of spreading invasive species with this equipment that has led to the need for weed mitigation prior to the start of this project.

CUSP, SAWE, and Open Call Volunteers will spend the day eliminating noxious weeds from approximately 20 acres of this property. While much of the common grounds are in excellent condition and well-maintained, this project will focus on less traveled areas, thickets, and old poorly maintained roads that will be used for logging equipment. This project will not be strenuous and shade will be available. Camp Santa Maria sits at 8,200 ft. of elevation 5 miles South of Shawnee, Colorado, off of Hwy 285. The minimum age requirement for participants is 14.
