Workday Descriptions:

We will be working on projects designed to prevent catastrophic fire. Projects are of the greatest priority need and may include: constructing burn piles for prescribed fires at sites in the wildland/urban interface (WUI), identified as potential areas of severe fire.  Projects may include moving mitigation material (slash or downed limbs) or moving wood for chipping.  We may also move wood for Help the Needy, a local group that provides fuel wood to heat homes.

If the conditions are right we may conduct prescribed burning.  We do not typically have volunteers on site for fires.  You will need to be fully prepared to be in a burn area.   The work will include assisting with staging equipment, safety patrol and ‘mop up,’ shoveling snow on embers.  It is mandatory that each participant be in PPE, personal protective equipment (listed below).

All work is dependent upon environmental factors; unpredictable weather, runoff and soil movement will determine exact locations and work details.  Your efforts will minimize impacts that affect water supplies, homes and lives. This critical work will help your group foster team spirit and a shared vision of forest health and disaster prevention.  Your assistance is greatly appreciated.

Important Notes:

CUSP will provide hard hats, tools and materials necessary to complete project work
Restrooms may not be available on site
Safety review and work demonstration will precede all project work

Requirements of Volunteers:

All volunteers must complete and submit prior to the project:

A CUSP 2015 Release Form, one per each person; and a VOLUNTEER LISTING 2015, please print and complete one listing for each day.   Documents are attached.  Please print all documents two sided.

Please Bring Daily:

Any applicable medicines (including epi-pens, insulin and inhalers)
Sunscreen
Sun glasses or safety glasses
Work gloves
Sturdy shoes with tread, ankle support is preferable
Long pants are required; long sleeved shirts are strongly recommended
A heavy coat
A backpack to carry water and lunch
Water containers, the use of reusable containers is encouraged – water for refills will be provided
Please bring sack lunches daily

Special PPE

Natural fiber clothing, boots and gloves, cotton or canvas, is required in a burn area; synthetic materials will melt or burn.

What to Expect:

Wildland burn areas and green forest projects are located in exposed mountain environments. Please be aware and prepared for potential hazards, including but not limited to: driving on mountainous roads with snow, ice, loose gravel and flash flood potential; exposure to sun, wind, lightning and rapidly changing weather conditions; working with sharpened tools in areas with unstable terrain and footing; possible falling trees; and hiking at significant elevation. Medications may have adverse effects in sun, heat or altitude.  Please list medications and medical conditions on the CUSP release form so staff may be aware of potential concerns. Know your limitations and inform staff immediately if you become ill or injured. Be prepared to exit quickly in the event of an emergency or changing environmental conditions. Please drink plenty of water prior to and during the project to avoid dehydration, which occurs rapidly at high elevation and dry climate. Please wear appropriate clothing; clothing may become stained or ruined.  The minimum age requirement is 18.

Please note that cell phone coverage is limited in these areas.

The below office number may be used as an emergency contact number.

Typical navigational GPS units are often inaccurate in mountainous regions as well.
