Workday Description:

The Waldo Canyon Fire burned in 2012 at 18,600+ acres. This is a great opportunity to work on some of the restoration efforts that have been performed in and around the Waldo Canyon burn scar. This project is at the lower Camp Creek detention basin. These basins are designed to capture debris, ash, and slow the velocity of water. This particular basin, and many others, helps to protect the West side of Colorado Springs, including the Pleasant Valley community on 30th street during flooding. The volunteer project will be raking and seeding and installing erosion control matting to help re-establish vegetation around the deposition basin. This project will help stabilize the basin and protect the Colorado Springs community, infrastructure, homes and lives.

Important Notes:

  • For your safety all drivers are asked to remain with the group for the duration of the project
  • CUSP will provide hard hats, tools and materials necessary to complete project work
  • Portable restroom(s) will be available onsite
  • Safety review and work demonstration will precede the project work
  • Weather, which could create hazardous conditions, may cause this project to be canceled or rescheduled; we will notify you of changes in a timely manner; changes will also be posted at this site.

Requirements of Volunteers:

All volunteers must complete and submit prior to the project: a CUSP Liability Release, 2014 CUSP RELEASE and a Volunteer Sign-up Sheet, VOLUNTEER LISTING 2014(1)(for groups), attached. Please print all documents two-sided.

 Please Bring:

Any applicable medicines (including epi-pens, insulin and inhalers)
Sunscreen
Sun glasses or safety glasses
Work gloves
Sturdy shoes, preferably with ankle support
Long pants are required; long sleeved shirts are strongly recommended
Water containers, extra water will be provided from Igloos
A sack lunch

What to Expect:

This project will occur in an exposed mountain environment. Please be aware and prepared for potential hazards, including but not limited to: driving on mountainous roads with loose gravel and high flash flood potential; exposure to sun, wind, lightning and rapidly changing weather conditions; working with sharpened tools in areas with unstable terrain and footing; possible falling trees; and hiking at significant elevation. Medications may have adverse effects in sun, heat or altitude. Please list medications and medical conditions on the CUSP release form so staff may be aware of potential concerns. Know your limitations and inform staff immediately if you become ill or injured. Be prepared to exit quickly in the event of an emergency or changing environmental conditions. Please drink plenty of water prior to and during the project to avoid dehydration. Please wear appropriate clothing; clothing may become stained or ruined.

This is a moderately challenging project.

The minimum age requirement for this project is 13.
