Directions: From Colorado Springs head West on US Highway 24 towards Cascade. At the stoplight in Cascade, turn right onto Severly Rd. The library is just past the fire station.  We will caravan to Wellington Gulch.

Workday Description:
Since the Waldo Canyon Fire in 2012, our infrastructure, homes and businesses have been damaged and threatened by the flooding after the fire. From 2012-2015 we saw ample flooding events along US HWY 24 and efforts to stabilize the channels that transport the water and sediment are still underway. CUSP has been working to stabilize lower Wellington Gulch, this has involved the removal of tens of thousands of cubic yards of sediment. The project will include applying grass seed on the newly formed slopes of the gulch, jute matting, as well as planting tree saplings.  The establishment of the grass seed is the first step of the process to stabilize the raw slope.

 

Important Notes:

  • CUSP will provide hard hats, materials and necessary tools to complete project work
  • Due to variable weather conditions and safety for our volunteers all vehicles and drivers must remain onsite for the duration of the project
  • A portable restroom will be available on site
  • A safety review and work demonstration will proceed the project work
  • Weather, which could create hazardous conditions, may cause the project to be canceled or rescheduled; staff will monitor weather and notify you of any changes, which will also be posted on this page.

 

Requirements of Volunteers:
All volunteers must complete and submit prior to the project:

CUSP-2016-Release-Form (needed for each volunteer, please print double sided)

VOLUNTEER-LISTING-2016 (1) (one for your group)

Please Bring:

A daypack to carry water and lunch

A refillable water container, we will have Igloos at the vehicle for refills
Any applicable medicines (including epi-pens, insulin and inhalers)
Sunscreen
Sunglasses or safety glasses
Long pants and long sleeved shirts are strongly recommended
Work gloves and tight liner gloves for extra warmth (we will provide regular work gloves if you do not have them)
Sturdy shoes with good tread; no sandals please
A sack lunch

 

What to Expect:
This project will occur in an exposed mountain environment in the winter months. Please be aware and prepared for potential hazards, including but not limited to: driving on mountainous roads with loose gravel, and snow; exposure to sun, wind, snow and rapidly changing weather conditions; working with sharpened tools in areas with unstable terrain and footing; hiking at significant elevation. Medications may have adverse effects in sun, heat or altitude; please list medications and medical conditions on the CUSP release form so staff may be aware of potential concerns. Know your limitations and inform staff immediately if you become ill or injured. Be prepared to exit quickly in the event of an emergency or changing environmental conditions.  Please be prepared to hike up to a total of 1/2 mile at high elevation in varying weather conditions. Please drink plenty of water prior to and during the project to stay hydrated.
