Workday Description:
Post fire flooding poses a major threat of damage to homes, lives and infrastructure in the Waldo Canyon Fire burn scar. Many sites along US Highway 24 and Fountain Creek have been identified as highly vulnerable to flood impacts.
All work is dependent upon prioritized needs and environmental factors – unpredictable weather, runoff and soil movement will determine project and location details. Volunteers may be working directly in the creek or on uneven hillsides; you will be notified if waterproof gear is needed. Project work will include one or more of the following:
- Removing debris and potentially dangerous structures from properties; relocating items to higher ground or off site Re-vegetation of hillslopes
- Installing erosion control wattles, straw bale structures or log erosion barriers
- Building sandbag barriers
- Raking of aerial seeding around sediment retention ponds
- Constructing rock gabion baskets
Important Notes:
- CUSP will provide hard hats, tools and materials necessary to complete project work
- A restroom will be available on site
Safety review and work demonstration will precede the project work - Weather, which could create hazardous conditions, may cause projects to be canceled or rescheduled; changes will be posted at this site.
Requirements of Volunteers:
All volunteers must complete and submit prior to the project: a CUSP Liability Release CUSPrelease2013 and a Volunteer Sign-up Sheet, VolListSignup fillable.
Please Bring:
Any applicable medicines (including epi-pens, insulin and inhalers)
Sunscreen
Sun glasses or safety glasses
Work gloves
Work boots with ankle support
Long pants are required; long sleeved shirts are strongly recommended
Water containers, the use of reusable containers is encouraged – refills will be provided
What to Expect:
The burn area is in an exposed mountain environment. Please be aware and prepared for potential hazards, including but not limited to: driving on mountainous roads with loose gravel and high flash flood potential; exposure to sun, wind, lightening and rapidly changing weather conditions; working with sharpened tools in areas with unstable terrain and footing; possible falling trees; hiking at significant elevation. Medications may have adverse effects in sun, heat or altitude, please list medications and medical conditions on the CUSP release form so staff may be aware of potential concerns. Know your limitations and inform staff immediately if you become ill or injured. Be prepared to exit quickly in the event of an emergency or changing environmental conditions. Please drink plenty of water prior to and during the project to avoid dehydration. Please wear appropriate clothing; clothing may become stained or ruined. This project is not suitable for expectant mothers. This challenging project; the age minimum is 18.
