Workday Description:

In response to the Waldo Canyon fire, we will help mitigate flooding and repair fire damage within the Northfield Drainage.  This area of the burn is now subject to erosion and mud slides which threaten Colorado Springs’ municipal water supply.  Work will address one or more of the following needs: re-shaping the ground surface; re-seeding and mulching; and building erosion control structures to stabilize hillslopes and drainages prone to flood events.

Important Notes:

  • Hardhats and all necessary tools and materials to complete project will be provided
  • Portable restrooms will be available  on site
  • A safety review and work demonstration will precede the project work
  • Weather which could create hazardous conditions may cause the project to be canceled or rescheduled; you will be notified of any changes in a timely fashion

Requirements of Volunteers:

Prior to the project each volunteer must submit a completed Liability Release Form, CUSPrelease2013.  A Volunteer Sign-up Sheet will be initialed by individuals.

Please Bring:
Any applicable medicines (including epi-pens, insulin and inhalers)
Sunscreen
Sun glasses or safety glasses
Work gloves
Work boots with ankle support
Long pants and long sleeved shirts are strongly recommended
Water containers, to carry with you, the use of reusable containers is encouraged – refills will be provided

What to Expect:

The burn area is in an exposed mountain environment.  Please be aware and prepared for potential hazards, including but not limited to: driving on mountainous roads with loose gravel and high flash flood potential; exposure to sun, wind, lightening and rapidly changing weather conditions; working with sharpened tools in areas with unstable terrain and footing; possible falling trees; hiking at significant elevation.  Medications may have adverse effects in sun, heat or altitude, please list medications and medical conditions on the CUSP release form so staff may be aware of potential concerns. Know your limitations and inform staff immediately if you become ill or injured.  Be prepared to exit quickly in the event of an emergency or changing environmental conditions.  Please drink plenty of water prior to and during the project to avoid dehydration.  This project is not suitable for expectant mothers.  This is a challenging project, requiring team effort.

Please wear appropriate clothing; clothing may become stained or ruined.  Please bring a covering to protect the interior of your vehicle.

PROJECT IS LOCATED OFF OF FOREST SERVICE ROAD #303.  ACCESS TO THE AREA IS LIMITED.  IF YOU ARE NOT AT THE GATE AT THE START TIME YOU MAY NOT BE ABLE TO JOIN IN THE EVENT.
