Morrow Mt. Trail Project
Workday Description:
The scope of this project includes a number of recreational enhancements to the 18-acre parcel known as McGraw Park. Both residents and visitors use the park on a regular basis, including families, young adults, kayakers, anglers, and retirees.
Work includes clearing a 3-foot wide trail approximately 2 miles long, including stairs and erosion control where appropriate, and using road base where needed for stabilization. The trail will accommodate a steep grade in certain areas. A considerable portion of the historic trail has been constructed but more remains to be accomplished. The work will be challenging, rewarding and requires team effort.
Long Range Vision:
The project scope entails upgrading existing features adding amenities to increase the park’s function: a small dock, picnic areas with barbecues, informational pathways, improved access and safety features of the historic Keystone bridge, improve the parking areas and improved signage for the park. Plans include:
a) Fishing dock constructed of treated lumber and located adjacent to the river
b) Kayak launch – cleared path with treated lumber stairs down to a level launch area along river
c) Hiking trail Loop trail covering 18 acres and adjoining National Forest Three small (5’x10’) treated lumber observation decks along the trail Horticulture and wildlife signs at points of interest
Workday Schedule:
We will begin at 9:00 AM and complete project work about 3:00 PM, with a 30 minute lunch break around noon.
Mandatory Requirements of Volunteers:
All volunteers must complete and submit prior to or on the day of the project: a CUSP liability release form. CUSP will provide hard hats, materials and tools to complete project.
Please Bring:
Sturdy shoes with tread or work boots
Layered clothing suitable for changing weather
Any applicable medicines (including epi-pen and inhalers, if needed)
Sun block, Sun glasses or safety glasses
Coat and/or a raingear, and gloves
A bottle for drinking water – we aim to reduce the use of recycled plastic bottles
A sack lunch
What to Expect:
These projects occur in an exposed mountain environment, at a significantly higher elevation than surrounding areas. Please wear clothes that can get dirty! Please drink plenty of water before and during project to avoid dehydration. Plenty of water will be provided to refill water bottles.
Weather:
Event(s) may be canceled or rescheduled due to bad weather, natural elements which could create hazardous conditions for volunteers and staff, for example: High winds, snow, and heavy rains.
CUSP will monitor weather before event and notify you of any changes in a timely fashion.
Directions to McGraw Memorial Park, Bailey Colorado:
From U.S. Highway 285, turn on County Road 68 – Wellington Lake Road. The park is behind the Rustic Station Restaurant, Sudz Laundromat and the Bailey Depot Feed Store. Look for the Keystone Railroad Bridge over the South Platte River. Trail is on Morrow Mountain across bridge from park.
