Workdays: March 18 – 23, 2013
Project Locations: Will vary; we will meet daily at Wendy’s parking lot at the junction of Hwy 24 and 67, then caravan to work sites
Project Times: Meet at 9:00 am, work until 3:00 pm daily, with a half hour lunch break at noon
Work Descriptions:
Due to the severity of Colorado forest fires there is significant concern that spring and summer rains will cause significant flood issues. It is anticipated that floodwaters from denuded slopes will result in high volume floods, damaging roads, homes, wildlife habitat and compromising water supplies. Your efforts will help minimize this damage.
Depending on weather and environmental factors, work may address one or more of the following needs: removal or chipping of burned hazard trees; contour raking and re-shaping the ground surface; re-seeding vegetation and/or mulching; building erosion control structures to stabilize hillslopes and drainages prone to flood events; protecting restoration sites with fencing, jute matting or willow plantings; fuels mitigation (removing slash or building burn piles) to prevent future catastrophic fires.
Important Notes:
- A safety review and work demonstration will precede each project
- CUSP will provide all necessary materials, tools and hardhats
- CUSP will provide on-site portable restrooms
- Weather which could create hazardous conditions may cause projects to be canceled or rescheduled; you will be notified of any changes in a timely fashion
Mandatory Requirements of Volunteers:
Prior to the project each volunteer must submit a completed a CUSP liability release form CUSPrelease2013, a Flying W release form FLYINGW20123 release of registered participant, and a daily volunteer sign-up sheet VolListSignup fillable for the group.
Please Bring:
Any applicable medicines (including epi-pen and inhalers)
Sunscreen
Sun glasses (or safety glasses)
Layered clothing appropriate for outdoor work, and extra: coat, gloves and footwear
Boots with ankle support and good tread
Travel size water containers, the use of reusable containers is encouraged
Sack lunches – daily
