We are will be working in the Waldo Canyon burn and need 75 volunteers to help on this Friday, August 10th.  It is important that you contact: lisa@uppersouthplatte.org before this Wednesday, August 8th if you wish to join us.  We will not be able to accommodate unregistered participants on the project day.
The burn area will need a great deal of assistance; we are seeking hardy groups to assist in immediate rehabilitation needs in the coming months.

Please read the below project information description carefully, as there are inherent risks when working in a burn area.  Pets are not permitted on projects; this project is not suitable for children under the age of sixteen (minors must be accompanied by an adult).  We appreciate your generosity, support and kind consideration of these requests.

Waldo Canyon Fire

Rehabilitation Project

Workday: Friday, August 10th, 2012

Project Times: 8:00 AM to 2:00 PM

Volunteers Needed: 75

Workday Description:

 In response to the most destructive fire in Colorado’s history, volunteers and will help mitigate flooding and repair fire damage at the Flying W Ranch in the Waldo Canyon burn scar.  This area of the burn is now subject to erosion and mud slides threatening Colorado Springs’ municipal water supply.  Work will involve removal and chipping of burned hazard trees, re-shaping the ground surface, re-seeding, mulching and building erosion control structures to stabilize drainages prone to flood events.  

The Coalition for the Upper South Platte (CUSP) will be working with staff from Florissant Fossil Beds National Monument and various volunteer groups.  You must be registered prior to attending this project, please contact Lisa@uppersouthplatte.org .

Important Notes:

CUSP will provide hard hats, tools and materials necessary to complete project work
Portable restrooms will be available  on site
A safety review and work demonstration will proceed the project work
Weather which could create hazardous conditions may cause the project to be canceled or rescheduled; CUSP will monitor weather and notify you of any changes in a timely fashion

Requirements of Volunteers:

Prior to the project each volunteer must submit a completed Liability Release Form (sent at registration).  A Volunteer Sign-up Sheet must be initialed by individuals.

Please Bring:

Any applicable medicines (including epi-pens, insulin and inhalers)

Sunscreen

Sun glasses or safety glasses

Work gloves

Sturdy shoes with good tread

Long pants and long sleeved shirts are strongly recommended

Water containers, the use of reusable containers is encouraged – refills will be provided

A sack lunch

What to Expect:

The burn area is in an exposed mountain environment.  Please be aware and prepared for potential hazards, including but not limited to: driving on mountainous roads with loose gravel and high flash flood potential; exposure to sun, wind, lightening and rapidly changing weather conditions; working with sharpened tools in areas with unstable terrain and footing; possible falling trees; hiking at significant elevation.  Medications may have adverse effects in sun, heat or altitude, please list medications and medical conditions on the CUSP release form so staff may be aware of potential concerns. Know your limitations and inform staff immediately if you become ill or injured.  Be prepared to exit quickly in the event of an emergency or changing environmental conditions.  Please drink plenty of water prior to and during the project to avoid dehydration.  Please wear appropriate clothing; clothing may become stained or ruined.
