Workday Description:
The USAFA team will work in the Palmer Lake area, a part of the Upper Monument Creek Watershed project. Efforts will raise wildfire awareness and help protect homes, neighborhoods and entire communities, while increasing safety for wildland firefighters. The National Wildfire Protection Association has a public service announcement, please share it with others: https://youtu.be/dqt-r9oLsLs. Volunteers will help to haul, stack and chip materials from wildfire mitigation, a green forest health project.

All work is dependent upon environmental factors – unpredictable weather, runoff and soil movement may alter project and location details.

Important Notes:

  • ALL vehicles must remain at project site for the duration of the project
  • CUSP will provide hard hats, tools and materials necessary to complete project work
  • A portable restroom will be available on site
  • Safety review and work demonstration will precede the project work
  • Weather, which could create hazardous conditions, may cause projects to be canceled or rescheduled; we will notify you of changes promptly, changes will also be posted at: www.cusp.ws

Requirements of Volunteers:
All volunteers must complete and submit prior to the project: a CUSP Liability Release, CUSP 2015 Release Form and a Volunteer Sign-up Sheet,VOLUNTEER LISTING 2015 , for the group.

Please print ALL documents two sided.

Please Bring:
Any applicable medicines (including epi-pens, insulin and inhalers)
Sunscreen
Sun glasses or safety glasses
Work gloves
Work boots with ankle support
Long pants are required; long sleeved shirts are strongly recommended
Water containers, extra water will be provided
Sack lunches, to carry with you

What to Expect:
Green forest projects are located in exposed mountain environments. Please be aware and prepared for potential hazards, including but not limited to: driving on mountainous roads with snow, ice and/or loose gravel; exposure to sun, wind, lightning and rapidly changing weather conditions; possible falling trees; and hiking at significant elevation. Medications may have adverse effects in sun, heat or altitude. Please list medications and medical conditions on the CUSP release form so staff may be aware of potential concerns. Know your limitations and inform staff immediately if you become ill or injured. Be prepared to exit quickly in the event of an emergency or changing environmental conditions. Please drink plenty of water prior to and during the project to avoid dehydration, which occurs rapidly at high elevation and dry climate. Please wear appropriate clothing. The minimum age requirement is 16.

Please note that cell phone coverage is available in this area.
The below office number may be used as an emergency contact number.

Typical navigational GPS units are often inaccurate in mountainous regions.
