Workday Description:

The United States Forest Service and CUSP are partnering together to offer a Wilderness trail maintenance day with the Wilderness Society. The Lost Creek Wilderness was officially designated in the Colorado Wilderness Act of 1980. Today it totals 119,790 acres and has moderate to heavy usage. There are nearly 130 miles of trails that traverse tree-lined mountain parks, fascinating rounded granite domes, and rare granite arches. Black bears, mountain lions, bighorn sheep, deer, elk and bobcats share the region. Vegetation includes ponderosa, bristlecone, and lodgepole pine, aspen, spruce, fir, and alpine tundra.

This highly used area has significant trail erosion issues and the project work will help to minimize erosion effects and improve the overall trail condition. The section of the trail we will be maintaining is just outside of the Lost Creek Wilderness boundary. The hike will be a little over one mile in. The work will consist of building rock check-dam structures, rock water-bars, and rock steps.

Important Notes:

  • CUSP will provide hard hats, materials and necessary tools to complete project work
  • A USFS outhouse will be available for participants at the trailhead
  • A safety review and work demonstration will proceed the project work
  • Weather, which could create hazardous conditions, may cause the project to be canceled or rescheduled; staff will monitor weather and notify you of any changes, which will also be posted to this website

Requirements of Volunteers:

Prior to the project each volunteer must submit a completed Liability Release form, 2014 CUSP RELEASE. The group also needs to submit a Volunteer Listing, VOLUNTEER LISTING 2014(1)  attached.

Please print documents on both sides.

Please Bring:

A daypack to carry enough water and lunch (recommend two liters)
Any applicable medicines (including epi-pens, insulin and inhalers)
Sunscreen
Sunglasses or safety glasses
Long pants and long sleeved shirts are strongly recommended
A coat, in case of adverse weather conditions
Work gloves (we will have some if you do not)
Sturdy shoes with good tread; no sandals please
Water containers, enough to last the day, we will have refill containers at the trailhead
A sack lunch, to carry with you, we will not return to vehicles for lunch

What to Expect:

This project will occur in an exposed mountain environment. Please be aware and prepared for potential hazards, including but not limited to: driving on mountainous roads with loose gravel and flash flood potential; exposure to sun, wind, lightning and rapidly changing weather conditions; working with sharpened tools in areas with unstable terrain and footing; hiking at significant elevation. Medications may have adverse effects in sun, heat or altitude; please list medications and medical conditions on the CUSP release form so staff may be aware of potential concerns. Know your limitations and inform staff immediately if you become ill or injured. Be prepared to exit quickly, as advised by staff, in the event of an emergency or changing environmental conditions.  Please be prepared to hike up to one mile at high elevation in varying weather conditions. Please drink plenty of water prior to and during the project to stay hydrated.  Expect to have a great day working as a team!

GPS systems and Internet map sites are often misleading in the mountains. Cell phone service will be inconsistent.
